Welcome to Kalymnos
Sponge diving in Kalymnos
Between Kos and Leros, Kalymnos is the fourth largest island of the Dodecanese. It is surrounded by quiet islets — some inhabited only by sheep and goats, while others, like Telendos and Pserimos, have a few houses and tavernas. The landscape of Kalymnos is rocky, with imposing slopes fragrant with thyme, sage, and oregano — key ingredients of the exquisite honey for which the island is famous. The fertile valleys offer a pleasant contrast, especially Vathy, with its turquoise fjords and calm orchards of citrus trees.
Kalymnos is best known as the homeland of the world’s finest sponge divers. The sea has always been the center of the island’s life, and its colorful traditions and sense of community remain almost unchanged. Picturesque hiking trails, crystal-clear waters for snorkeling or diving, unique-quality rocky formations for climbing, and warm hospitality are just a few of the pleasures awaiting visitors. Kalymnos is also an ideal base for visiting neighboring islands. Patmos, Leipsoi, Leros, Kos, and Nisyros are all accessible for day trips.
“You saw the island where the fig tree blooms,
where the twisted olive tree spreads silver leaves;
You saw the daughter of the Sun and the Sea,
the mother of the sponge; she who gives birth to lions,
nourishes giants and Kings of the Sea;
It is Kalymnos you saw, one of the Twelve Islands.”
